Chalk-a-bration

Betsy at Teaching Young Writers is hosting a Chalk-a-bration.  Today after our Terra Nova testing, we grabbed the chalk and headed outside to "chalk" some poetry to celebrate the end of National Poetry Month.  We have been busy writing poetry since the end of March and will be really celebrating next week with a Mother's Day Poet-tea, but today was a great way to spend a wonderful, warm and sunny afternoon.

If you are looking for more poetry ideas check out Amy Ludwig VanDerwater's website, The Poem Farm which was featured in the Wonder of the Day today, #575 What Is a Poetry Slam?

  1. What a joyful Smilebox! I am so happy to have found you and thank you for mentioning my blog too. If your students might like to share some of their work at The Poem Farm, please just let me know - amy at amy lv dot com. I'd love to feature them! These chalk poems are fantastic...wish I was walking by and could stop to savor each one. a.

    1. Amy,
I would love for you to feature some of my students poetry on your website. We have visited your site several times as a class over the last month or so. One idea we used of yours was having each student write down one word on a piece of paper and then each day we pulled out a new word. It was great for those that had trouble thinking of a topic for writing their own poem. Thank you for all you do to inspire young writers!

    2. Betsy, Oh yay! Thank you. I am wondering if you might want to post about this. Have you ever seen the "Classroom Poetry Peeks" in the left hand sidebar? If you look at a few, you'll see what those classroom posts are like. A real practical lesson or idea or story or publication idea along with a few student poems, words from the teacher, and a photo or two if possible. I love for people to be able to come and be inspired by the children's work and then also to walk away with a new way to spread poetrylove in their own classes. My e-mail address is amy at amylv dot com, so whenever you're ready! Please feel free to write anytime. I'm taking a week off of the blog, though! ;) a.

  3. This was so fun! Thanks for sharing! We tried some chalk poetry, too (but I don't have a cute video like yours!). Some of these kindergarteners wrote some powerful stuff...
